This guide is for replacing the circle pad joystick on the Nintendo 3DS XL.

Some advice before you start

Recommended repair kit

Step 1

Before replacing the circle pad joystick, you have to turn off the device for safety reasons.

To do so, press the power button for a few seconds and click on "turn off".

Step 2

Grab the stylus.

Remove it.

Step 3

The stylus of your Nintendo 3DS XL is now disassembled.

Step 4

Press the game cartridge.

Grab and remove it.

Step 5

Remove the two cruciform screws circled in red with a cruciform screw.

They secure the rear case.

Step 6

Use the iSesamo in order to unclip the lower case.

Remove it.

Step 7

The lower case of your Nintendo 3DS XL is now disassembled.

Step 8

Use the nylon spudger in order to pry on the right side of the battery to remove it.

Step 9

The battery of your Nintendo 3DS XL is now disassembled.

Step 10

Remove the 5 cruciform screws that secure the rear case.

Step 11

Use the iSesamo and remove the white rubber that cover the screws located on the top part of the rear case.

Step 12

Remove the two cruciform screws.

Step 13

Grab the complete rear case and flip it to a 90° angle.

Careful, two cables are still attached to the logic board.

Step 14

With the nylon spudger, disconnect the two L and R trigger cables.

Step 15

The rear case of your 3DS XL is now entirely removed.

Step 16

Remove the two cruciform screws circled in red.

They secure the circle pad joystick.

Step 17

Grab the circle pad joystick with a pair of tweezers and put it aside.

Don't remove it entirely, it is still attached to the logic board.

Step 18

With the nylon spudger, unlock the connector from the circle pad joystick cable.

Then grab it with a pair of tweezers and remove it.

Step 19

The circle pad joystick is now disassembled.

You can replace it with a new one if needed.
